Marble is metamorphic rock formed from recrystallization of limestone. True marble is generally white. Whites or translucent with veining or color made by other minerals.
Marble is valued and has been used for thousands of years because of its rich palette of colors and can be used also any where in the house for floors, fireplace, counter tops and all parts of the bathroom.
Marbles are usually polished to a high sheen but now you can find it tumbled and antiqued with chiseled edges.
Most Green Marbles on the market are not marble but serpentines or serpentines of which the stone Jade is the best know and the hard Verde Antique from Vermont. They are related to Basalt and because they are from the mantel of the earth, they are a bit harder and do not etch as other Marbles.
Marble’s hardness range is from 4 to 5 on the MOHS ten-point scale (diamonds are a 10) Although this makes it perfect for high traffic areas of the home, care should be taken as to the subject of scratching and etching of the Marble. As with all stone Marble should be sealed to prevent stains penetration.
