Travertine has been around for millions of years and is perhaps one of the most usable stone for home and office. Travertine comes generally filled and polished or filled and honed. Filled travertine’s has a smooth surface like most marbles. Unfilled travertine is beautiful in its own right and is often used on the exterior of buildings.
Travertine’s are made from hot spring water percolating up through underground Limestone. When the water is gone, it leaves behind dissolved Limestone and other minerals in layers of banded material. The holes in Travertine are from gas which escapes forming the cavities. Travertine’s color range from beiges, tans, and other beautiful colors.
Travertine has a hardness of 4 to 5 on the MOHS scale making it all right for most areas of the home. Again care needs to be taken with a penetrating sealer for the protection of the stone from penetrating stains.
